About this tool

The Flesch Reading Ease score estimates how hard a piece of English text is to read, based purely on two measurable things: average sentence length and average syllables per word. Turkish uses a different, purpose-built formula (Ateşman, 1997) since Turkish's regular syllable structure and different sentence conventions make the English formula's constants a poor fit.

How to use it

  1. Choose the text's language — English (Flesch) or Turkish (Ateşman) — and paste it in.
  2. The score updates live, along with word count, sentence count and the underlying averages the formula is built from.
  3. For English text, a Flesch-Kincaid grade level is also shown — roughly the US school grade a reader would need to follow the text comfortably.

Examples

A short, simple sentence

The cat sat on the mat.
A high Flesch score (well into the 90s) — short sentences and short words score as very easy to read.

Common problems

A technical document scores as "very difficult" but that's expected for its audience.
Readability formulas measure surface difficulty (sentence and word length), not whether the content is appropriate for its intended reader — a legal contract or a medical paper scoring low isn't a defect if that's genuinely who it's written for.
