The confusion usually comes from mixing up three distinct operations: finding a percentage of a number, expressing a number as a percentage of another, and calculating the change between two values.

Common problems

The result is wrong — I expect a positive number but get negative.: For % change, the order matters: change from X to Y. If Y is smaller than X the result is negative (a decrease).
