About this tool

Find and replace is the operation behind a dozen other tools — cleaning up a CSV export, renaming a variable across a pasted snippet, fixing a recurring typo in a document. Doing it with plain text search is enough for a literal string; a regular expression is what you reach for when the thing you're matching has a pattern rather than one exact spelling.

How to use it

  1. Paste your text, then fill in what to find and what to replace it with.
  2. Turn on "Use regular expression" to match a pattern instead of literal text — the same syntax as the Regex Tester.
  3. Toggle case sensitivity and whether to replace every match or just the first one.
  4. The match count updates live, so you can see how many replacements will happen before committing to them.

Examples

Removing a repeated prefix

Find: ^ITEM- (regex on)
Replace: (empty)
Text: ITEM-1042\nITEM-1043
1042
1043

Common problems

Nothing gets replaced even though I can see the text in the input.
Check case sensitivity — it's on by default, so "Hello" won't match a find of "hello" unless it's turned off.
